about

The original Prelude to the album was to have been the "Tom the Botanist Vocal Variations" which appeared on The Third Came First. It picks up from where "Tom the Botanist", the last song on the last Tristan Da Cunha album, left off. I didn't want to hang on to it though, so I put it out in 2014 to start that album. This piece comes from a scrap of staff paper that I've been carrying around since college (1995?). It was my first attempt to write some kind of choral piece. I couldn't really play piano back then. I remember plunking away at this thing, measure by measure, for hours in a practice room. I found it again in a pile of manuscript paper and decided to finally finish it. A lot of this album is about rescuing old ideas and this bit of music seemed to fit the bill.
